A comprehensive guide to Shanghai's trendy arts district, featuring art galleries, boutique shops, and traditional shikumen architecture.
Tianzifang is a vibrant arts and crafts district located in Shanghai's former French Concession. What began as a cluster of traditional shikumen (stone-gate) houses has evolved into a popular destination filled with art galleries, boutique shops, cafes, and creative workshops.
The district's narrow lanes wind through preserved residential neighborhoods, creating a charming contrast between old Shanghai architecture and contemporary art. It's a perfect place for exploring, finding unique souvenirs, and soaking up Shanghai's creative atmosphere. Many artists and designers have set up studios here, making it a hub of artistic activity.
Start your exploration at the main entrance on Taikang Road. Wander through the narrow lanes, stopping at art galleries and boutique shops. Don't miss the courtyard galleries hidden within traditional shikumen houses.
Must-visit spots are the Chen Yifei Studio, the artistic starting point of Tianzifang. Its dark green wooden door is very recognizable, and the artistic sculptures at the entrance make it perfect for photos. Continue to Lantern Lane - in the evening, warm yellow lanterns illuminate the narrow alleyways, creating a cinematic atmosphere reminiscent of old Shanghai.
Stop at souvenir shops for unique handmade crafts, then take a break at cozy cafes or tea houses. End your visit with dinner at one of the area's restaurants.
